Being Harriet

Dedications & Acknowledgements

To My Husband

You are my best friend, best lover, best husband, best father, best guy I’ve ever met. You’re the Harriet Whisperer. Meeting you on December 5th, 2012 at 11:17 am at Hotel Sugar Beach in Potrero, Costa Rica was my biggest blessing in my life, and I’ve had a lot of blessings. You’ve taught me how to love and how to redirect my compass back to love when I get thrown off. You’ve helped me see how I was in my own way and loved me unconditionally every day since we met. I love being your wife and I’m grateful for you every day, regardless of how much I show it. And thank you also for always being open and adjusting your schedule when I come to you saying, “baby will you read my thing?” This book is a lot of those things wrapped into one, and you’ve read them all. I love you.

To My Daughter, Aurora May Lanka

You are amazing, and have become one of my biggest inspirations to write these stories. Both so that I can free up my head and heart space for you, and so that you can get to know the me before I met your father. I love you.

To My Family

Thank you for your love and support of me as I navigated all of these phases of my life in these stories. It has been a journey discovering and uncovering who I wanted to be, and learning how to heal my heart. You gave me the nickname H-Bomb in high school, because I was unpredictable, and these are the H-Bomb stories. Some you may know occurred, but others you had no idea, because I often had a parallel life from what you saw. So it’s time to shed light on all of it and call all my separate lives together for a team healing huddle.

To All My Friends Who Have Read My Stories Over the Years, Thank You

Every time I heard you say I was a good writer and you liked my stories, it helped me keep going. I’d also like to extend a deep gratitude to Mary Julia, my friend and goal coach since August 2018. We’ve been meeting every week since then and this book has been a part of my goals since then, so thank you for helping hold me accountable to me.

To You if You’re in One of These Stories,

Gosh, wow what a journey we’ve been on eh, and I wonder if you’d cringe, laugh, grin or roll your eyes if someone said my name to you. Regardless, thank you for being you, however you showed up in my life. Because it was enough that it made a story, and you helped me learn, grow and expand. So now, I’m writing and sending these stories out into the world with a heartfelt Ho’OPonopono prayer:

I love you
I’m sorry
Please forgive me
Thank you
I release you

May the release of these stories into the universe be for the highest good of all. May they heal who they’re supposed to heal. May they touch who they’re supposed to touch. May they bring people together. May they inspire others to share their story and may they rattle who they’re supposed to rattle. Because the rattle precedes a breaking open and deeper healing. Yay.

These stories have been stuck in me far too long and it’s time to release them, so that I can free up that space in me and give it to my gorgeous family & community.

My Prayer For This Book

May the release of these stories into the universe be for the highest good of all. May they heal who they’re supposed to heal. May they touch who they’re supposed to touch. May they bring people together. May they inspire others to share their story and may they rattle who they’re supposed to rattle. Because the rattle precedes a breaking open and deeper healing. Yay.
